Prolock Aqua Filterscherm anti-piping in veendijken

Innovative protection of peat dikes

Peat dikes, like regular dikes, face seepage and the risk of piping. This is often solved with a traditional clay cofferdam, but in some situations this offers insufficient protection. At the same time, peat dikes face an additional challenge: they must not dry out. Dry peat loses its stability, making the dike vulnerable. So the solution must both protect against piping and keep the peat moist.

Our solution: Prolock Aqua Filter Screen

The Prolock Aqua Filter Screen combines both functions in one system. It is a plastic sheet-pile profile about 5 meters high (depending on the pipe level), equipped with openings that function as a filter.

  • In the deeper layers, the screen closes off the piping route.
  • In the upper zone, the perforations keep the crest of the dike moist.
  • The hollow tubes of the profile are sealed at the top with a cap and then covered with soil, making the system durable and low-maintenance.

Prolock Aqua in peatlands

Due to the soft subsoil in peatlands, the screens are relatively easy to be driven in with a light crane and vibrating block. Extra heavy installation equipment is therefore not necessary. However, obstacles in the subsoil such as old tree roots, debris or stumps must be taken into account. For this, work can be done with leading steel guide tubes.

Practical example dike protection

In cooperation with contractor Van der Lee (Bruchem), we realized a pilot project at Waterschap Rijnland in Hazerswoude-Dorp. The PL Aqua Filter Screen has been successfully applied over a length of 220 meters.

With this innovative application we offer a sustainable, practical and feasible solution for the protection of peat dikes against piping, without the risk of drying out.

Easy installation

Fencing is quick and light to install in peatlands with a crane and vibrating block. Heavy machinery is not required. Obstacles in the subsoil? Then steel guide tubes offer a solution. Watch the video for the result!
